Chapter 37
Catherine picked up the phone and saw a recording inside. It captured everything Henry had just said, admitting to his wrongdoings.
“It’s up to you what you do with the recording,” Shaun remarked, glancing at her. “But remember to keep your temper in check next time. You lost the bidding only because you didn’t take care of your design. Treat this as a lesson and be wary of everyone in the workplace.”
Catherine stared at him, her expression dazed and complicated. She had assumed Rebecca won the bidding because Shaun and President Sawyer had pulled some strings. Now, she was confused. Why had he helped her? Was it Rebecca who had lied to her?
“Why are you spacing out again?” Shaun asked, sounding displeased. He expected her to feel deeply grateful.
“I’m just… Never mind. Thank you so much,” Catherine said sincerely.
“You should thank me, but it’s meaningless to thank me like this,” Shaun responded mockingly. “When I recover, I’ll make you roast pork. But don’t eat it every day. You’ll get fatty liver disease.”
“Who said I like roast pork? I only ate it because it was the least unappetizing dish you made,” Catherine interrupted, her tone teasing.
Shaun was clearly annoyed. “Well, you didn’t seem to mind eating it,” he retorted, but Catherine only found herself wanting to giggle.
Despite his refusal to be direct about anything, she nodded and acknowledged him.
“Yes, it’s my fault, and I’ve reflected on it. By the way, how much is the phone, the caregiver, and the hospital fees? I want to pay you back.”
She trailed off, unsure if she could afford it. The charges were likely only a few thousand dollars, but she still felt awkward about it.
“No need,” Shaun interrupted again. “Consider those fees as your payment for being Fudge’s sitter.”
“But—”
“I’m not desperate for that small amount of money,” Shaun said dismissively. “I’m heading to the office now. The caregiver will help you with the discharge process tomorrow. Make sure to get home early to take care of Fudge.”
“Okay, I will.” Catherine nodded.
At 11:00 a.m., Freya rushed into the room.
The sight of Catherine immediately made Freya furious. “Are we still friends? You didn’t even tell me you were in the hospital? If I hadn’t asked for Young Master Harrison’s number, I wouldn’t have known!”
“I dropped my phone, and I haven’t had the SIM card replaced yet,” Catherine explained, trying to ease her friend’s worry.
Freya grabbed Catherine’s hand, her concern palpable. “What happened last night? Did you really become an undercover agent for the police?”
Catherine quickly pieced it together. Apparently, the police had made an official announcement.
“What’s circulating about me right now?” Catherine asked.
Freya looked at her, eyes sparkling. “Some people believe it, others don’t.”
“That’s normal,” Catherine shrugged, her tone calm. “A lot of people have been waiting for something embarrassing to happen to me.”
She recounted briefly what had happened at the bidding event the day before. Freya was seething with anger.
“Ethan’s a bastard! That’s so scummy of him. Is he even human? He treated you so well back then, and now he’s completely changed. How did Rebecca get him to do this to you?”
Catherine gave a cynical smile. “Maybe he wasn’t really in love with me. Maybe he just wanted to be with someone from a pampered, rich family. To him, it doesn’t matter who she is.”
“Don’t be mad,” Freya said, trying to reassure her. “I read something this morning that the head of Melbourne Culture and Technology Center was frequently involved in bribery. He’s being suspended and investigated now. The bidding event yesterday has been affected too. Based on what’s being said online, people think Summit gave President Sawyer some benefits in private, which might have influenced the event’s outcome.”
Catherine stared at her, completely stunned. “How is that even possible?”
Freya quickly turned on her phone and started scrolling through the news. “Why would I lie to you? Let me show you the article.”
She held the phone up for Catherine to see.
