Chapter 69
Shaun’s grip on Catherine’s neck tightened slightly, causing her to gasp for air. She could feel her heart racing in her chest as panic surged through her. His eyes, usually calm and calculating, now held a cold intensity that sent a chill down her spine.
“I did it. I’m sorry,” Catherine finally admitted, her voice trembling. She had never seen him this furious before, and the reality of what she’d done hit her all at once. She had thought she could control the situation, but now it was spiraling out of control.
Shaun’s anger flared, but instead of getting more violent, his grip loosened just enough for Catherine to catch her breath. He took a step back, still glaring at her, his jaw clenched. The look on his face was a mix of disbelief and fury, as if he couldn’t comprehend why she would betray his trust like this.
“Why?” he demanded, his voice low and dangerous. “Why would you do this to me, Catherine?”
Catherine swallowed hard, her eyes wide with fear. She had no excuse for what she had done. “I—I thought… I thought it would make you relax, make you more… open. I just wanted to get closer to you. I thought if you were… drunk, you’d… you’d let your guard down.”
Shaun took a step toward her, his expression unreadable. “Is this how you plan on getting close to me? Through manipulation and deceit?” His words cut deeper than any physical blow.
Catherine’s heart sank, and she struggled to find the right words. “I’m sorry. I just… I was trying to help. I thought maybe… maybe if I did something for you, you’d see me differently.”
Shaun let out a bitter laugh, though it lacked humor. “You don’t need to do anything for me, Catherine. You’re already doing enough damage.” His eyes flashed with anger again, and Catherine recoiled instinctively.
For a moment, neither of them spoke. The silence between them felt suffocating, thick with the weight of the mistake she had made. Catherine wanted to apologize again, to explain herself, but she didn’t know how. The fear of losing Shaun, the man she was beginning to care for, overwhelmed her.
Finally, Shaun broke the silence, his voice cold and controlled. “I don’t know what to think of you anymore.” He turned away from her, walking back toward the bathroom.
“Shaun, please… I didn’t mean for this to happen,” Catherine pleaded, her voice shaky.
Without turning around, he responded, “You’d better think long and hard about your actions, Catherine. You’ve crossed a line tonight, and I won’t forget it.”
The finality in his words sent a sharp pain through her chest. She stood there, paralyzed, as he disappeared into the bathroom, leaving her to face the consequences of her impulsive actions.
Catherine’s knees nearly gave out, and she sank onto the bed, burying her face in her hands. The guilt and fear consumed her, and she wondered if she had just ruined everything between them.
