Chapter 6
Shaun was flipping through a file when the door to his office opened, and Chase Harrison walked in with a grin plastered on his face.
“Congratulations! Should we have dinner with your new wife tonight?” Chase asked, his voice light with amusement.
Shaun didn’t even look up from the papers. “It’s not like you don’t know the real reason why I married her,” he replied flatly, his tone dismissive.
Chase, ever the curious one, leaned forward with a raised eyebrow. “I heard Catherine Jones is quite the beauty. Aren’t you at least a little bit interested?”
Shaun paused for just a moment, his mind drifting to her soft, milky skin and the way her beauty bloomed like a flower. But then he remembered her bold, relentless behavior. With a sigh, he answered, “I’ve seen countless attractive women.”
Chase chuckled, sensing the detached response. “Fair enough. An insignificant young lady from Melbourne wouldn’t stand a chance to be your wife unless you were trying to avoid an arranged marriage by your family. She’s not really a match for someone of your status, is she?”
Shaun glanced up at his friend, his gaze indifferent. “Exactly,” he replied, before turning back to the paperwork.
Chase smirked. “The infamous undefeatable legend has returned. How are you adjusting to life in a small place like Melbourne?”
Shaun’s lips twitched slightly. “It’s certainly an experience to live like the poor.”
Chase hissed, feigning outrage. “The world is so unfair. We graduated together, but you’ve already climbed to the top, and here I am…”
Shaun’s gaze hardened slightly. “It all comes down to the structure of our brains,” he said, matter-of-factly.
Chase gritted his teeth, trying to brush off the remark. “Forget it. Let’s just have dinner with a few solicitors from the firm tonight.”
“Hmm,” Shaun muttered, already distracted. His phone buzzed with a notification, pulling his attention away from the conversation. He glanced down at the message from someone named ‘Shaunerine.’
[Hubby, this is Cathy.]
Shaun’s brow furrowed slightly at the unfamiliar nickname. He pocketed his phone, his mind momentarily distracted by the new developments in his life.
