Chapter 74
Catherine’s heart pounded in her chest as she stood there, waiting for Shaun’s response. She watched closely as his face briefly faltered, a rare moment of hesitation she hadn’t expected. But his indifference quickly returned, leaving her questioning whether he’d actually known all along—or if he had been lying to her.
“Shaun,” she said, her voice firm despite the storm of emotions inside. “Why didn’t you tell me about Fudge?”
Shaun gave a slight shrug, as if it were insignificant. “You never asked.”
Catherine felt a wave of frustration rise in her. “I never asked? You didn’t think it was important enough to mention, that Fudge is about to have kittens? You didn’t think I should know?”
Shaun’s eyes narrowed. “What difference would it have made? It’s just a cat. Why are you making such a big deal out of it?”
“Because you used her against me, Shaun!” Catherine snapped, her anger building. “You made me feel guilty, like I had done something wrong when I hadn’t. You were the one who made me think it was my fault that Fudge had been sick. And you didn’t even bother to tell me the truth!”
Shaun’s face darkened, and for a moment, he looked like he was about to lash out. But he held himself in check. “Stop overreacting, Catherine. It’s just a cat.”
“It’s not just a cat, Shaun!” she exclaimed, her voice trembling with emotion. “You’ve been using her to manipulate me, to make me feel guilty when I didn’t deserve it. I thought I was doing something wrong all along, and it was all based on a lie.”
Shaun was silent for a moment, seemingly processing her words. Then, he let out a breath, his expression hardening again. “Fine. If it makes you feel better, I should have told you. But it doesn’t change anything.”
Catherine’s hands clenched at her sides as she fought to control her temper. “You never change, do you? You’re so caught up in your own world that you can’t even see the impact of your actions on other people.”
She could see that Shaun was getting more agitated, and a part of her knew that nothing she said would get through to him. But she was done. Done being his punching bag, done being manipulated, done with the emotional rollercoaster he constantly put her on.
“I’m not going to keep doing this,” she said, her voice calm but resolute. “I’m done pretending that this marriage is something it’s not. You’ve made it clear where we stand. And I can’t keep living like this.”
Shaun’s eyes narrowed again, but this time, she didn’t back down. She had to put herself first for once.
“Don’t do anything rash, Catherine,” Shaun warned, his voice cold and detached.
But Catherine was already walking away. She had made up her mind.
