Chapter 64
Catherine’s face burned with embarrassment, and she wished she could vanish from the car right then and there. How had this happened? She had never been in such an awkward situation before, and now, not only had Shaun and Chase witnessed the mishap, but it seemed like she had to explain herself in front of them.
She quickly stammered, “It was a mistake, I swear. I wasn’t trying to—”
Shaun’s cold tone cut through her attempt at an explanation. “Don’t watch things like that again. It’s not something I expect from you.”
Catherine’s heart sank a little, but she nodded, fully aware that she had done something she shouldn’t have. She couldn’t believe Freya had sent her something like that—especially at such a crucial moment when she was already trying to navigate the complicated dynamics between herself and Shaun.
Chase, however, seemed to find the situation more amusing than serious. “Don’t worry, Sister-in-law. We all have our guilty pleasures,” he teased, though his smirk didn’t quite reach his eyes. It was clear he was enjoying watching her squirm, even if he wasn’t saying much more.
Catherine shot him a quick, embarrassed glance, then turned to Shaun, who was now driving with his focus completely fixed on the road. His expression was unreadable, but she could feel the tension coming off him.
The rest of the drive was silent, the awkwardness hanging in the air like a thick fog. Every now and then, she would glance at Shaun’s stiff posture and wonder if he was still upset. She couldn’t quite read him at that moment, but his earlier stern warning still echoed in her mind.
When they arrived at the venue, Catherine didn’t feel much relief. The event was already in full swing, and she was quickly ushered into the grand hall by Shaun, who walked with a deliberate pace, his usual confidence on full display.
Shaun introduced her to several people, and Catherine did her best to hold it together, despite the lingering unease from the car ride. She couldn’t help but feel self-conscious. Every glance, every word felt like an examination. Was she overthinking? Maybe. But being in such close proximity to Shaun while trying to maintain her composure was making her second-guess herself at every turn.
Freya’s earlier words about her plan to get Shaun drunk felt like they were echoing in her ears. Catherine wasn’t sure what exactly she was hoping for, but she couldn’t shake the feeling that her entire plan was spiraling out of control. She had wanted things to go smoothly, to have the night be a simple event that allowed them to be closer. But now, with her blunder earlier and the pressure of it all, she was left wondering if she had miscalculated everything.
As the night wore on, Shaun was pulled in different directions by the crowd, leaving Catherine to fend for herself with a glass of wine in her hand and her thoughts running wild. Would she be able to carry through with Freya’s plan? Would Shaun remain distant, or would they find a way to break down the walls between them?
She couldn’t help but wonder.
