“Maybe not,” Shaun said, his voice tight. “Freya mentioned that the Jones family is hopelessly biased.”
“Alright, I’ll check it out,” Hadley replied, sensing Shaun’s growing frustration.
An hour later, Hadley had some news.
“Miss Jones went to the Jones family’s house three days ago. Shortly after she entered, the family headed to the old house in Pennington. She’s probably there.”
Shaun’s face hardened. “Do you mean she might be imprisoned?”
“Very likely,” Hadley confirmed. “The Jones family wouldn’t go there unless it was for their family worship. The place is remote and desolate.”
Shaun clenched his phone. “Come and pick me up. I’m going to visit that place in person.”
Pennington was far from the city, so it took Hadley three hours of driving before they finally reached the desolate location. It was already midnight when they arrived. As Shaun stepped out of the car, he realized just how eerie the place felt—surrounded by mountains, with not a single light in sight.
The old house, which belonged to the Jones family, was constructed in a closed-off, almost fortress-like manner. The main door showed signs of age, looking several decades old.
Shaun knocked, but no one responded. He immediately scaled the wall.
As soon as his feet hit the ground on the other side, a flash of light shone on him.
“Who are you? Why are you barging into the house in the middle of the night?” an elderly woman demanded, holding a torchlight.
“I’m looking for someone. I knocked, but you didn’t open the door,” Shaun explained, irritation rising in his voice.
“I’m the only one living here. Get out now.” The old lady pushed him, her tone frantic.
Shaun didn’t budge. He shoved her aside, took the torchlight from her hand, and proceeded toward the house. As he surveyed the area, a chill ran down his spine.
All the windows were nailed shut, and the front door was locked.
