Chapter 40
Catherine continued her shopping and added a few more items to the cart. “I need these spices for cooking. And I bought some noodles so I can cook for you when you return late from work. We’re also running low on toilet paper and rags.”
For a brief moment, Shaun found himself under the impression that Catherine was his wife, given how she seemed to take care of everything in the house with such attentiveness.
“By the way…” Catherine added, pointing to the tissue paper box in her cart, “…this will be placed in your car. That way, you won’t always have to use the tissue paper from the gas stations. This soft tissue is quite economical.”
Shaun, perplexed, asked, “Since when do I use the tissue paper from the gas stations?”
“It’s in your car,” Catherine replied nonchalantly, “It’s still there. But don’t worry. I admire your frugal personality. It’s rare to meet a man who lives so efficiently. You’re the perfect man, really charming.”
Overwhelmed by the unexpected compliments, Shaun lowered his head, the sight of Catherine’s bright eyes reminding him of the first time they met. Her expression now seemed a world apart from the indifferent woman he had seen two days ago, her cheeky attitude lifting his spirits.
“You shouldn’t be working as a designer. You should be a brown noser,” Shaun teased, trying to keep his composure.
Catherine giggled. “I just want to be your brown noser.”
Shaun waved her off with a smile. “Go pay the bill now.”
As they approached the counter, a saleswoman enthusiastically stopped them. “Hello, sir and madam! Are you interested in Durex? We’re running a promotion—buy one, get one free. It’s really economical.”
Catherine’s face flushed at the sight of the small box in the salesperson’s hand. “No… No need,” she stammered.
“Ohhh, so you’re newlyweds then, planning to have a child?” the saleswoman asked, her voice full of knowing.
Catherine quickly dragged Shaun away, trying to avoid any more questions. “Do we intend to have a child?” Shaun asked, his voice low and teasing.
“I was just lying to her. Are you planning on using it?” Catherine asked casually.
“Stop dreaming,” Shaun shot back with a grin. “Even if I were to use it, it wouldn’t be with you.”
Despite his blunt words, Catherine’s playful expression lingered in his thoughts. He gritted his teeth, mentally cursing himself for the silly thought that crossed his mind.
Catherine, on the other hand, chuckled quietly to herself. What a cold fish, she thought. She wouldn’t be trying so hard to please him if not for her plan to become Ethan’s aunt and get back at the scummy couple.
After leaving the mall, Shaun drove them back to Jadeite Bay. Catherine had prepared four dishes and a soup, thinking she might have made too much food. But as Shaun dug in, it became clear he hadn’t had a proper meal in days, finishing everything in no time.
Once they finished eating, both Shaun and Fudge lounged on the couch to rest. Shaun looked over at Catherine and asked, “What are you planning to do next? Continue searching for a job?”
Catherine thought for a moment. “I’ll replace my SIM card this afternoon, but let’s talk about the job later.”
Shaun, still lounging lazily, responded, “Don’t worry about it. If you can’t find a job, just stay home and cook for me. You won’t have to worry about money.”
Catherine, caught off guard, blinked. “Are you going to work now?”
Shaun nodded, putting on his windbreaker. “Yeah, there’s still a lot of work to deal with.”
Once he left, Catherine glanced at the time, noting it was 1:00 p.m. She felt a pang of sympathy for him. Being a boss couldn’t be easy—he didn’t even have a set lunch break, and he had probably made time out of his busy schedule just to pick her up earlier.
