Chapter 91
Shaun stared at his phone, a frown deepening on his face as the call ended abruptly. His mind raced, but no matter how hard he tried to suppress it, a small part of him felt something shift. Catherine was serious, wasn’t she? It wasn’t the usual back-and-forth banter, nor was it a game. Her tone had been clear—she really did want a divorce.
“Damn it,” he muttered under his breath. He leaned back in his chair, staring at the ceiling, the weight of the situation settling in. He had told himself over and over again that he didn’t care, that he didn’t want to deal with her childish antics anymore. But now, the thought of her actually walking away… it unsettled him more than he had expected.
He thought about the last few months—how things had been between them. The constant push and pull. Catherine’s unpredictable nature had both frustrated and intrigued him. Maybe it had been a challenge, or maybe he had been playing a game himself, unsure of what he wanted. But now… now she was serious, and for the first time in a long while, he wasn’t entirely sure how to play it.
He stood up abruptly, running a hand through his hair. “What the hell am I doing?” he muttered.
His thoughts were interrupted by the door swinging open. Chase, still a little stunned by what he had witnessed earlier, peeked his head inside. “Is everything okay?”
Shaun didn’t answer immediately. Instead, he grabbed his coat and headed for the door, his expression unreadable. “I’m going to the registry office,” he said shortly.
Chase blinked. “Wait, you’re actually going?”
Shaun didn’t pause as he walked past his friend, but there was a slight twitch of his lips—something that could almost be considered a smile. “Maybe it’s time to stop playing games.” He didn’t wait for Chase’s response, disappearing down the hallway with a newfound determination.
Chase stood there for a moment, his eyes wide with disbelief. He had seen Shaun play with women before, seen him dismiss them like they were nothing. But this… this was different. Was Shaun actually going to give in? Was he going to let Catherine walk out of his life just like that?
The door closed behind him with a quiet click, and Chase let out a breath he didn’t realize he’d been holding. If Shaun Hill, the ever-cool and detached man, was willing to drop everything for a divorce… then maybe Catherine had finally gotten under his skin in a way no one else ever had.
Catherine stood in front of the registry office, her heart pounding in her chest. She had never expected Shaun to actually agree to meet her here, let alone make it this far. When she had made the call, she had been angry, sure. But now, seeing the building in front of her, she wasn’t so sure anymore. What was she really doing?
She had thought she was over the emotional mess that had been their marriage. But now that the possibility of ending it was real, a strange sense of uncertainty crept up on her. She took a deep breath and shook her head. No. This is the right thing to do. It’s time to move on.
Just as she was about to walk in, the familiar sound of an engine revving echoed in the distance. She turned, and her eyes narrowed as Shaun’s sleek car pulled into the parking lot. He got out with that same cool demeanor, but there was something different about the way he moved. It was as if he had made up his mind about something, but the uncertainty still lingered in his eyes.
Their gazes locked from across the lot. For a brief moment, neither of them moved, as if they were both waiting for the other to make the first move. And then, without a word, Shaun started walking toward her.
Catherine’s heart raced, but she stood her ground, not willing to back down. This was it—the moment where everything changed.
