Chapter 58
Catherine turned away, pretending to stare out the window to hide the flush creeping up her neck. “Freya, can you not suggest things like that?” she muttered, trying to keep her composure.
Freya only laughed, her voice light but teasing. “Come on, Catherine. You’re already married to the guy. Might as well make it count.”
The words hung in the air between them, and Catherine couldn’t help but feel a mix of frustration and confusion. What did that even mean? How was she supposed to make things irreversible when everything with Shaun felt like it was in a constant state of limbo? He was cold, distant, and seemed completely uninterested in their so-called marriage. Yet, he still expected her to follow his every command—like buying clothes for him or walking Fudge in the middle of the night.
“Do you really think I should?” Catherine asked quietly, almost as though she were speaking to herself.
“Why not?” Freya shrugged. “You can’t keep being his housekeeper forever, right? If you’re going to be stuck with him, might as well get something out of it.”
Catherine’s grip on the door handle tightened as her thoughts swirled. She knew Freya was just trying to help, but could she really do that? Could she become the wife Shaun wanted, even if he treated her like an employee? And more importantly, was she willing to try?
The car pulled up to the mall, and Freya turned to her, a playful glint in her eyes. “Look, I say go for it. You deserve to be more than just his ‘housekeeper.’ Who knows, maybe by the end of the night, you’ll have a few surprises in store for yourself, too.”
Catherine didn’t respond immediately. Her heart was racing, torn between the frustration of Shaun’s coldness and the temptation of finally gaining some control over the situation. It wasn’t just about clothes, was it? It was about her life, her choices, and how she wanted to shape the future.
As they entered the mall, the hustle and bustle around them didn’t help her thoughts settle. Freya was already dragging her toward a designer boutique, her mind focused on the task at hand—shopping. Catherine, however, couldn’t shake the feeling that her life was spiraling toward something bigger than a simple trip to buy clothes. The engagement ceremony loomed in the distance, and the weight of her role in it was heavy.
She didn’t know what to expect from Shaun, but one thing was certain: her life with him was far from over. Whether she liked it or not, the marriage, the choices, and her feelings were only going to get more complicated.
“Hey,” Freya said, snapping her out of her thoughts. “Do you even know what you want to buy?”
Catherine blinked. “I guess… something warmer,” she said, half-heartedly. But in truth, she had no idea what she needed. She wasn’t thinking about clothes right now. She was thinking about her marriage—about Shaun and the part of her that was still holding onto hope that things could change.
As they made their way through the mall, Catherine couldn’t help but wonder: Could she really change the course of this marriage? Or was she doomed to stay in the role of the dutiful, obedient housekeeper forever?
