Chapter 38
Catherine was stunned. She couldn’t shake the feeling that something about this situation seemed off, almost too coincidental.
“What goes around comes around,” Freya said gleefully. “You see, many large design companies invested so much time, manpower, and resources into the bidding yesterday, only for it to all go to waste. I guess the center must’ve offended someone.”
After thinking it through, Catherine couldn’t help but agree. It was a relief to know that Rebecca’s efforts had been wasted. It served her right.
At Summit Building Design Group, Jeffrey was fuming. In a fit of rage, he hurled the ashtray across the room.
This was the first time Rebecca had ever seen him lose his temper. She stood there, trembling, too afraid to move.
The top executives had celebrated Rebecca’s victory in the bidding last night, enjoying a lavish feast. But today, she came to work only to find out that President Sawyer had been arrested.
“What do we do now if President Sawyer’s involvement in bribery gets exposed?” Rebecca anxiously looked toward her mother.
Sally, trying to calm her daughter down, patted her shoulder. “Don’t worry. Your dad’s been in this business for years. He’ll find a way to settle it.”
But Jeffrey was seething. “Even if we can settle it, Summit’s reputation will be severely damaged.”
Sally shot Jeffrey a glare. “This isn’t Rebecca’s fault. She’s done her best. Anyone in her position would have been caught in this mess. Someone was clearly scheming to frame President Sawyer.”
“I’m not blaming her,” Jeffrey muttered, still clearly upset.
Just then, the general manager rushed in with bad news. “Mr. Jones, regarding the Chelsea Sports Stadium development project, the organizer just called and informed us that they’re pulling out. Also, Holmes International Hotel said they won’t be working with us anymore.”
Jeffrey’s head spun. These were two major projects Summit had been working on for the past two years, and now they were slipping through his fingers.
The general manager continued, “Also, our application to visit the World Expo exhibition in Country S has been outright rejected. Mr. Jones, did we offend someone? It seems like someone’s targeting Summit.”
Jeffrey staggered slightly. He had led Summit to international recognition, and now everything seemed to be falling apart. “I’ve always been careful in this industry. I haven’t offended anyone.”
Rebecca hesitated before speaking. “Could it be… Cathy?”
“Don’t get me wrong. I’m not trying to bad-mouth her. It wasn’t such a big deal when Catherine dragged me out of Grapefruit Restaurant that day. But Janet and Cindy were really angry. They said they would do something about it… Janet’s close with the Campbell family, and I heard Cindy has ties to the wealthy.”
Sally’s eyes narrowed. “It surely has to do with Catherine. What a menace!”
