Chapter 39
Catherine was discharged from the hospital after two days, and Shaun personally came to pick her up. His actions were undeniably thoughtful, and Catherine couldn’t help but feel a bit flattered by the special treatment she was receiving.
However, after driving for some time, Shaun didn’t take her back to Jadeite Bay. Instead, he drove to the parking lot of a large mall.
With his usual carefree expression, Shaun remarked, “Fudge has been picky and her appetite’s been off these last few days since you weren’t here to cook for her. Buy some ingredients and make something special for her.”
Catherine paused, wondering to herself whether it was really Fudge who was picky or if Shaun was the one with the demanding tastes.
“What are you waiting for? Hurry up,” Shaun urged, evidently tired of the bland meals Hadley had brought him.
Catherine sighed, deciding to take it upon herself to prepare something great for both Fudge and Shaun as a token of gratitude for his help. As she walked into the mall, her mind raced with ideas for dishes she could make. Over ten recipes for Fudge ran through her mind, as well as some yogurt, fresh milk, fruit, and a bit of junk food.
After a round of shopping, Catherine realized her cart was overflowing with items. It was clear she wouldn’t be able to carry everything herself, so she quickly sent Shaun a message on WhatsApp:
“Shaunny, I’m buying a lot of stuff, and I don’t think I can carry everything. Can you help me carry a few bags?”
She waited, but five minutes passed without a response. She sighed, resigned to the fact that Shaun probably wouldn’t come through. After all, he wasn’t exactly the type to be called “thoughtful.”
Just then, a shadow loomed over her. Catherine looked up, and there was Shaun standing in front of her. He had removed his windbreaker, now only wearing a creamy white top, giving him an air of coolness and elegance. Catherine was momentarily stunned by his appearance—he looked like someone straight out of a poster, perfect from every angle.
Shaun, noticing her distracted gaze, was neither irritated nor repelled by it, which surprised him. Instead, he was oddly in a good mood. “I just wanted you to buy some ingredients, but you’ve ended up buying so much.”
Catherine quickly scrambled for an explanation. “Well, I thought you and Fudge haven’t had proper meals these past few days, so I decided to buy a bit more…”
Shaun raised a hand to stop her, frowning slightly. “I ate fine. It was Fudge who didn’t eat well. Don’t include me in that. I’m not picky about food.”
Catherine didn’t know how to respond. She couldn’t help but notice the hunger in his eyes as they lingered on the ingredients in her cart. She thought, Could you please stop staring at the food and preserve your dignity?
“Yeah, Fudge didn’t eat well,” she agreed, nodding quickly. “And the stuff I’m buying is all necessary. You need yogurt, fresh milk, and fruits every day for good nutrition. You might seem healthy now, but you work hard every day, and sometimes even drink for business. You have to take care of your body and maintain a balanced diet when you’re home.”
Shaun was momentarily quiet, his eyes revealing a mix of emotions. No one had ever really paid attention to his diet before. Most people only cared about what he could do for the Hill family, about the wealth and influence he brought. No one had bothered to think about whether he was getting the proper care.
Catherine’s words had caught him off guard, and for the first time in a long while, someone had shown genuine concern for his well-being.
