Chapter 43
After a long day of work, Shaun attended a meeting about an international financial case. He had a couple of drinks during the meeting, which left him feeling slightly dizzy.
When he entered his house and switched on the lights, Fudge ran up to him, meowing excitedly while rubbing against his leg.
“Little one, you missed me, huh?” Shaun said with a soft smile, rubbing Fudge’s head. But after a while, he noticed something was off. Fudge kept rubbing her nose against the empty food bowl, looking hungry.
Had Catherine not fed her?
Shaun quickly poured some cat food into the bowl, noticing how badly Fudge seemed to be starving. Concerned, he went to Catherine’s room to find her, only to discover she wasn’t home. His face darkened instantly.
This woman was always causing problems. First, she had been hospitalized, and now, after returning to his house, she had left Fudge like this and still hadn’t come back, even though it was already so late.
He took out his phone to call her, but it went straight to voicemail. Catherine had turned off her phone.
Worried, Shaun decided to track her location. Fortunately, he had turned on location tracking when he gave her the phone earlier that day, just in case something like last night happened again.
After tracking her location, Shaun messaged Hadley. [Check out this location for me.]
A minute later, Hadley called him. “This is the Jones family’s house, where Miss Jones’ parents live.”
Shaun’s anger flared. “Got it.”
He hung up the phone, his hands clenched in fury. So this woman thinks she can do whatever she wants? I’ve been nothing but kind to her, and now she goes home without even telling me? What a nerve. She thinks she can bite the hand that fed her.
He was seething. If she had the audacity to not come back, then so be it. He wouldn’t care about her anymore, even if something happened to her.
To his surprise, three days passed with no word from Catherine. She didn’t answer his calls, and there was no news about her. This only deepened his frustration.
He barely ate during these three days. Even when he visited one of Melbourne’s best restaurants, recommended by Chase, he found the food unappetizing. His mind kept drifting back to Catherine. Something didn’t feel right. But whenever he checked her location, she was always at the Jones family’s house.
Her biological parents couldn’t hurt her… Shaun reasoned. She must have simply forgotten about me.
During the past three days, Shaun had been like an iceberg at work—cold and distant. He couldn’t shake the nagging feeling that something was wrong.
On his way out of the office, he bumped into Chase.
“Are you going home to take care of Fudge? Is Catherine still not back?” Chase asked.
“Don’t mention that woman to me anymore,” Shaun snapped, his voice cold as he walked past.
Chase shrugged. “I had to ask. Freya asked me to check in on her. She’s worried since she hasn’t been able to get in touch with Catherine. She’s wondering if something’s happened to her.”
Shaun froze in place. She’s been at the Jones family’s house, hasn’t she?
“Let me try calling her again,” Chase suggested, pulling out his phone.
Shaun, already irritated, didn’t wait for him. He took the elevator down and left the building, trying to push the thoughts out of his head. It was probably just his imagination. He didn’t want to overthink things or stick his nose in Catherine’s business.
But just as he reached home, his phone rang. It was Chase.
“That’s strange,” Chase said. “Freya told me she visited the Jones family, and they told her Catherine went abroad to relax. They wouldn’t give me her contact info, though. Damn, could something have happened to her?”
Shaun frowned, his mind racing. I don’t think so. She’s their biological daughter after all.
