Chapter 50
Catherine couldn’t help but wince when she thought about what had just happened with Shaun. She had really gone too far with her impulsive action—biting him in a moment of frustration. Yet, there was something about his cold and calculated demeanor that made her want to break the tension, even if her approach was ridiculous. It was all so complicated—Shaun’s pride, her emotions, and their tangled relationship.
When he bit her back, it only seemed to escalate everything. The cheeky, sarcastic way she tried to defuse the situation with her “proof of love” comment was just adding fuel to the fire. Still, Catherine couldn’t help but feel a weird sense of satisfaction when she noticed the deep impressions of his teeth on her skin. It felt like a twisted kind of proof of their dynamic—imprinted physically, even if it was painful.
She sighed internally, reflecting on how her actions always seemed to provoke him, but it was becoming impossible to avoid his presence. Every time she thought she had gotten a grip on the situation, he would show up, more infuriating and intense than before.
As Shaun walked out of the elevator at the Melbourne Court, his air of authority made heads turn. She could easily imagine how every room he entered fell under his spell, whether he was speaking to clients or opposing counsel. Despite his gruff exterior and masked face, he commanded attention. And now, as he faced another trial, his reputation as a lawyer was undeniable.
His firm, stoic approach was clearly working. The client, Mr. Smith, was practically groveling before him, desperate for reassurance. “Attorney Hill, will I lose?” the man had asked, his voice full of uncertainty.
Shaun’s response was sharp and dismissive: “I’ve never lost.” His cold, authoritative tone left no room for doubt. If anyone could pull this off, it was him.
Catherine, watching from a distance, couldn’t help but admire his competence—though it was frustrating. His aloofness was a shield, one that was as intimidating as it was effective. As much as she wanted to see him falter, she knew he was untouchable in his world. His words were often too sharp, too pointed, but there was something to be said about someone who never backed down from a challenge.
And yet, this same man had a habit of showing up uninvited into her life, rattling her world with every encounter. She could already feel the tension between them building again. Would he keep pushing her boundaries, testing her patience, until she had no choice but to give in? Or would she finally find a way to step back and regain control of the situation?
For now, though, she could only watch as the trial unfolded, knowing that whatever happened next, Shaun was always one step ahead.
