Chapter 72
Catherine’s heart raced as she tried to process what Wesley had just said. Distant relatives. Was he truly just a distant relative of the Lowes? Or was there something more to this connection, something he wasn’t telling her?
She forced a smile, nodding slowly as she pretended to be indifferent. “I see. Small world, isn’t it?” Her voice was a bit colder than she had intended, but she couldn’t help it. The thought of Ethan and Rebecca getting married, and now this mysterious connection with Wesley, left her feeling unsettled.
Wesley seemed to notice her unease and quickly changed the subject. “Anyway, I appreciate your hard work, Miss Jones. The design is exactly what I was looking for. I’ll make sure to pass it on to President Lyons.”
Catherine nodded absentmindedly, her thoughts swirling. She wanted to ask more about his connection to the Lowes, but she didn’t want to appear too curious or confrontational. Besides, it was already hard enough dealing with her own emotions, let alone entangling herself further in Ethan’s family drama.
“Thank you for your time, Mr. Lyons,” she said politely, grabbing her bag as she prepared to leave.
As she stepped toward the door, Wesley’s voice stopped her. “By the way, Miss Jones, if you ever need anything, don’t hesitate to reach out. I’d be happy to help.”
She turned to face him, trying to maintain a neutral expression. “I appreciate it. Have a good day.”
The elevator ride down felt longer than usual, and as she stepped out of the building, Catherine found herself lost in thought. The encounter with Wesley had left her with more questions than answers. Who was he really, and why did he feel the need to hide his connection to the Lowes? Was he trying to protect her from the truth, or was there something more sinister at play?
Her phone buzzed in her bag, snapping her out of her reverie. It was a message from Freya.
“How’s everything with the sketch? You okay? You sound off on the phone.”
Catherine stared at the message for a moment before typing back.
“Yeah, it’s fine. Just… a lot on my mind.”
She tucked the phone back in her bag and sighed. The weight of everything—the fallout with Shaun, the wedding with Ethan, the strange encounter with Wesley—was becoming too much to bear. But she knew she couldn’t run away from it. There was still so much to figure out, and it seemed like she was only scratching the surface.
As she walked away from Golden Corporation, her thoughts continued to race. She had to face whatever came next, but the road ahead seemed darker and more uncertain than ever before.
