Chapter 73
Catherine blinked in surprise at the woman’s observation. “Give birth?” she repeated, not quite sure what to make of it.
The woman, noticing her confusion, nodded. “Yes, if you look closely, you can tell. Her belly is starting to show. It’ll be soon.”
Catherine looked down at Fudge, who was contentedly lounging on the ground, not the least bit concerned about what was being said. She hadn’t noticed any significant changes in the cat’s behavior, but she supposed it made sense. Fudge had been a bit lazier than usual, and now that the woman had pointed it out, she could vaguely see the subtle rounding of the cat’s belly.
“Thanks for letting me know,” Catherine said, a bit absentmindedly, as her thoughts wandered back to her own concerns.
The woman smiled kindly, giving Catherine a quick nod before continuing her walk. Catherine watched her go before turning her attention back to Fudge. “Well, I guess we have to prepare for some little ones soon, huh?”
She smiled softly to herself, the thought of tiny kittens bringing a fleeting moment of joy to her otherwise tiring day.
Her phone buzzed in her pocket, snapping her out of her thoughts. She pulled it out and saw a message from Freya.
“How’s everything going? Are you okay after everything with Shaun?”
Catherine hesitated for a moment before typing back.
“It’s been rough. But I’m managing. Just trying to keep my head above water.”
She sighed, looking down at Fudge. Her life had become a tangled mess of emotions and confusion. Shaun’s bitterness, her unresolved feelings for Ethan, and now the strange connection with Wesley—it all felt too much at times. But what could she do? She had to keep moving forward, even if she didn’t know what the future held.
After sending the message, she leaned against the fence, her gaze fixed on the basketball game across the way. The noise and laughter from the young players felt so distant, almost like a reminder of a simpler time, one she could never quite reach anymore.
Her phone buzzed again, and she glanced at it.
“Let me know if you need anything. I’m here for you, Cathy.”
The simple message from Freya was a small comfort. Catherine smiled faintly, grateful for her friend’s support. But deep down, she couldn’t help but feel like she was drowning in her own problems, and she wasn’t sure if anyone could truly help her out of this mess.
With a deep breath, she turned back toward the house, her mind still swirling. Tomorrow, she’d have to face another day, but for now, she needed a little peace.
