Chapter 78
Catherine’s heart pounded as she stepped into the hallway, the weight of her decision finally settling in. The world outside the door felt cold and unforgiving, but it was a world she needed to step into, one that would finally release her from the suffocating tension that had defined her life with Shaun.
As the door closed behind her, sealing off the last remnants of their toxic, contract-bound marriage, she could still hear his voice, harsh and dismissive, echoing in her mind. “I won’t take you back even if you get down on your knees…” The words stung, but they also served as a reminder that she was no longer bound by the expectations he had imposed upon her.
Her hand trembled as she clutched the suitcase. She had no place to go, no safe haven except for herself. She didn’t care that she was leaving Fudge behind or that she had no plan beyond the immediate moment. She was leaving, and that was enough.
The night air felt crisp as she stepped outside, the cool breeze carrying away some of the weight she had been carrying for so long. She didn’t look back, not even when the sound of something shattering behind her reverberated through the night. What had he broken? Maybe it was a piece of furniture, maybe his pride, but either way, it no longer mattered to her.
Shaun’s anger, his cruel words, the betrayal that she had felt time and time again—none of it mattered. She had let herself be weighed down by his cruelty for too long, convinced that maybe things could change, that maybe they could be happy. But now she saw the truth. She had been blind, deceiving herself, holding on to a man who would never see her worth.
As she made her way down the dimly lit street, the tears that threatened to fall didn’t come. There was no time for them. She would grieve later, once she found some peace. Right now, she was free, and that was all she could cling to.
She could no longer afford to care about the broken promises or the man who had never truly cared for her.
I’ll be okay, she thought, her resolve strengthening with every step. I’ll be okay.
