Chapter 90
Shaun’s expression remained impassive as he listened to Chase, but there was a glimmer of something darker in his eyes. He had his own complicated feelings about Catherine and the whole situation, and as much as he tried to bury them, it was clear that he hadn’t fully let go.
“Disgraceful?” Shaun repeated, his voice clipped. “Catherine has her own way of dealing with things. I’m not going to pretend I know exactly what she’s thinking, but from what I’ve seen, she’s always been someone who stands up for herself.”
Chase raised an eyebrow, surprised at the way Shaun had spoken about her. There was no denying the tension in the room.
“Right. Well, whatever she’s doing, it’s none of our business,” Chase said, trying to lighten the mood. “But I’m sure the Jones family is livid.”
Shaun’s jaw tightened at the mention of the Jones family. His mind involuntarily drifted to the image of Catherine at the engagement ceremony, standing there in front of everyone with such defiance. It was almost as if she was daring them all to challenge her. Something about it struck a chord with him, though he wouldn’t admit it openly.
“Anything else?” Shaun asked, his tone more businesslike as he tried to shift his focus away from the lingering thoughts of Catherine.
Chase, sensing the shift, cleared his throat and nodded. “Yeah, about those new cases. We need to go over the details before you get too caught up in… whatever that was.”
Shaun gave a short nod, but his thoughts remained preoccupied with the scene he had just witnessed. Catherine’s actions, the way she had boldly confronted everyone, were imprinted in his mind. He couldn’t shake off the nagging feeling that maybe, just maybe, he had misjudged her. He had always viewed her as a prize to be claimed, a trophy of sorts, but now… there was something else. Something deeper.
“Let’s move on,” Shaun said curtly, pulling his attention back to the matter at hand. But even as he tried to focus, part of him couldn’t help but wonder just how far Catherine was willing to go—and whether he could still reach her.
