Chapter 21
company I’ve spent my life building?” Simon’s voice was thick with frustration, his anger boiling over.
Cordy sighed, leaning back in her chair as she spoke calmly. “I’m simply giving Noel what she’s always wanted, Simon. She’s been pushing for this position for years, hasn’t she? It’s time for her to step up and prove she’s capable.”
Simon’s fuming voice cut through the line. “You don’t know what you’re doing. Noel is far from ready for this, and you’ve just handed her the reins to everything.”
“Not quite,” Cordy responded, her tone still controlled. “I’m just giving her the title. I’m sure she’ll do just as well as she did with the design department.” Her words were laced with sarcasm, a subtle jab at Noel’s lackluster performance. “Besides, it’ll be interesting to see how she handles the responsibilities. Maybe she’ll surprise us all.”
There was a brief pause before Simon muttered, “You’re playing a dangerous game, Cordy.”
Cordy’s lips curled into a faint smile as she glanced out of the window, her mind working through the next steps of her plan. “Maybe. But I’m not the one who’s going to regret it.”
With that, she ended the call, feeling a small sense of satisfaction as she set the phone down. She had done exactly what she needed to do—placed Noel in a position where her flaws would be exposed. The struggle for control at Starstream Group was far from over, but now the dynamics had shifted, and Cordy knew she had the upper hand.
Meanwhile, back in the conference room, Noel’s mind was spinning. Her heart pounded in her chest as she tried to process what had just happened. One minute, she was defending her designs, and the next, Cordy had handed her the CEO position on a silver platter.
Noel didn’t know whether to feel triumphant or trapped. She had always wanted to prove herself, but now that she had what she thought she wanted, it didn’t feel like victory. It felt like a heavy burden.
She couldn’t help but glance at Faye, her deputy director, whose face mirrored Noel’s confusion. It was clear neither of them understood why Cordy had suddenly made this move, but Noel couldn’t afford to waste time questioning it. She needed to figure out how to hold onto her newfound power.
As she gathered her thoughts, Faye spoke up, her voice hesitant. “Director Sachs, um, are you sure about this? Taking over as CEO… It’s not something to take lightly.”
Noel snapped back into focus, her expression hardening. “Of course, I’m sure. I’m the CEO now, and I will do whatever it takes to prove myself.”
Faye seemed unconvinced, but she remained silent as Noel stood up from her seat. She had a lot to learn, but if there was one thing Noel was good at, it was pretending she had it all figured out. She was going to need all her wit and cunning to navigate the challenges ahead—and she wouldn’t let Cordy have the satisfaction of seeing her fail.
As she walked out of the conference room, her mind raced with a thousand possibilities. Cordy’s game wasn’t over, but neither was hers. It was time to show everyone that she, too, could play in the big leagues.
