Chapter 31
John paused, looking at her curiously. His expression softened a little as if he hadn’t expected her to ask that question.
“Yes, I am,” he replied, his voice steady but with a hint of something unreadable in his tone. “But it’s not something I advertise. The Levines are well-known, but I prefer to keep a low profile.”
Cordy nodded, trying to make sense of the situation. She had heard the name “Levine” in passing, always associated with wealth, power, and status. It was the kind of name that carried weight in this city. But John, in contrast to what she expected, seemed more down-to-earth, not flaunting his connection to the family.
“I didn’t expect that,” she admitted, her mind processing the new information. “You seem different from what I imagined.”
John smiled lightly, as if he found her observation amusing. “I guess people often expect someone from a family like mine to act a certain way. But we’re all just individuals at the end of the day.”
Cordy bit her lip, still absorbing what he was saying. There was an air of confidence and control about him, but it wasn’t brash or overbearing. It was… reserved. Almost like he was accustomed to being underestimated.
“Well, that’s good to know,” she said after a moment, still a little taken aback but trying to keep the conversation casual. “I didn’t mean to pry.”
John gave a small, understanding nod. “No harm done.”
The two of them stood there for a few moments, the weight of the quiet conversation hanging in the air. Cordy finally cleared her throat, attempting to shift the mood back to something more lighthearted.
“Anyway, it’s late,” she said, stepping back towards the door. “You should get going. Dicky’s asleep, and I’ll see you tomorrow at eight.”
John nodded again, giving her a brief but genuine smile. “I’ll be there. Goodnight, Ms. Sachs.”
“Goodnight, Mr. Levine,” she replied, her tone a little softer now, though still guarded.
As he left, Cordy stood in the doorway for a moment, her thoughts swirling. She hadn’t expected this evening to take the turn it had, especially with the reveal about John’s background. It seemed like there was so much more to him than met the eye.
But for now, she had other things to focus on. Tomorrow would bring its own set of challenges, and she needed to be prepared for whatever came next.
