Chapter 32
Winston gave Cordy a polite nod, his calm demeanor reflecting the professionalism she had come to expect from him. Richard, however, was clearly not ready to go, his small hands clutching the hem of Cordy’s shirt.
“I’ll see you tomorrow,” she repeated, her voice soft and comforting. “You’ll have fun with Daddy today, okay?”
Richard’s eyes were big and full of that innocent sadness only a child could express. “I don’t want to go, Mommy.”
Cordy bent down to his level, brushing a strand of his hair from his face. “I know, sweetheart. But you’ll see me soon. And Daddy is a lot of fun, right?”
Richard hesitated but nodded slowly. He wasn’t quite convinced, but he trusted his mom, so he allowed Winston to lead him toward the door.
“Goodbye, Mommy,” Richard said, his small voice carrying a mix of reluctance and affection.
Cordy watched them leave, her heart heavy with the weight of parting. It was always a little bittersweet when Richard had to go. Even though she understood it was for the best, she couldn’t help but feel the tug of motherhood as her son left for the day.
As the door clicked shut behind them, Cordy stood still for a moment. The house felt quieter without Richard’s presence, a stark contrast to the lively morning they’d shared.
She sighed softly, glancing at the clock. She had to get ready for work. But before she could move, she noticed the box of clothes that Winston had left behind. She walked over to it, inspecting the neatly folded clothes and other items John had arranged for Richard. There were even a couple of new toys tucked inside, likely to keep Richard entertained when he stayed over.
Cordy shook her head lightly, a small smile tugging at her lips. She hadn’t expected John to be so thorough—or perhaps she had underestimated him. But there was no denying that he was a devoted father.
As she started sorting through the items, her thoughts drifted back to their conversation the night before. John’s casual revelation about his family, and his reference to Kyle, still lingered in her mind. She found herself wondering about the dynamics between them all—the Levines, Richard, and herself. It was becoming increasingly complicated, but she couldn’t deny the curiosity gnawing at her.
With a soft sigh, Cordy snapped out of her reverie. She needed to focus on the day ahead. There was no point in overthinking everything now. But she couldn’t help but wonder: what would the next few days bring?
