Chapter 62
The workers’ anger was palpable, their frustration and resentment spilling over in every word they shouted. Cordy stood her ground, despite the growing tension in the air, her calm demeanor contrasting with the fury of the crowd.
“Please, listen to me,” she said, her voice steady but firm. “I didn’t know about the overtime issue, and I’ll make sure it’s addressed. I will personally see that everyone is compensated fairly. We won’t ignore this.”
Vince remained by her side, his posture tense, ready to step in if things escalated further. He understood the risks of such a volatile situation, and he knew how quickly things could spiral out of control.
But Cordy wasn’t backing down. She couldn’t afford to. Not now, not after everything she had worked for.
“Stop this madness and let me fix it,” Cordy continued. “We’ll have a proper meeting with the union representatives, and I’ll make sure your concerns are heard. I won’t let anyone suffer under my watch.”
The worker at the front, still fuming, crossed his arms. “Promises, promises. We’ve heard all of that before. Where were you when we needed you? You were too busy with your fancy meetings and deals, weren’t you?”
Cordy’s eyes narrowed as she took in his words. She could feel the weight of the accusation in the air, and she understood it all too well. For years, Starstream had been neglecting its workers, focusing on profits and deals while letting the employees suffer in silence. And now, as the new board chairman, it was her responsibility to fix it.
“I’m here now,” she said firmly, her voice unwavering. “And I will make sure we rectify this. I don’t make promises I don’t intend to keep. We’ll work out a fair solution for everyone.”
The workers didn’t seem entirely convinced, but they slowly began to disperse, their voices still murmuring in anger, though less intense now. Cordy could feel the tension lingering in the air as she turned to Vince.
“We need to handle this quickly,” she said, her mind racing with plans and strategies. “Get the union representative on the phone. I want to meet with them as soon as possible.”
Vince nodded, his face serious. “Understood, Ms. Sachs. I’ll make the arrangements.”
As Cordy and Vince made their way out of the plant, she couldn’t shake the feeling of disillusionment. She had known the job wouldn’t be easy, but this… this was different. It wasn’t just about board meetings and corporate strategies—it was about real people, their lives, their livelihoods. And now, she had to prove she could lead them through this storm, even if it meant going against the very forces that had been controlling the company for so long.
But in the back of her mind, she couldn’t ignore the feeling that Simon Sachs and his allies were always lurking, ready to pull the strings whenever they saw fit. And now, more than ever, Cordy realized how much work she had ahead of her to regain control—not just of the company, but of her own future.
She couldn’t afford to be weak. Not now. Not ever.
Back at her office later that day, Cordy felt the weight of her responsibilities pressing down on her. As she stared at the screen of her computer, the details of the workers’ strike still fresh in her mind, her phone buzzed again. This time, it was a message from John.
Are you free to talk now?
Cordy paused, her finger hovering over the screen. The tension from the plant was still thick in the air, but she knew that if she didn’t address this now, it would keep lingering. She had to decide where she stood with him. Could she push past the awkwardness? Could she trust him again after everything that had happened?
With a deep breath, Cordy replied.
I’m busy, John. We’ll talk later.
She quickly turned her attention back to the paperwork on her desk, trying to ignore the sinking feeling in her chest. She didn’t want to face him, not right now. There were too many other things she needed to focus on.
But even as she buried herself in her work, she couldn’t help but wonder if maybe she was running away from something that could make her stronger. Something that could help her finally face the challenges ahead.
