Chapter 82
Cordy laughed, a bit taken aback by Zoe’s bluntness, but she could see the playful, carefree energy in the actress’s words. “Family, huh? We just met a couple of hours ago, Zoe,” she teased, trying to lighten the situation.
Zoe, still leaning heavily against Cordy, simply giggled. “What can I say? You’re my type of people. Besides, anyone who can keep up with me in drinking has to be family.”
Cordy chuckled again, despite the slight awkwardness in the situation. She had always preferred a more subdued social life, but she couldn’t deny how easy it was to be around Zoe. The actress’s larger-than-life personality was intoxicating in its own right. As they continued to talk, Cordy noticed that the alcohol seemed to loosen Zoe’s tongue a bit more than usual.
“You know, I didn’t expect to like you this much,” Zoe admitted, her voice a little slurred, though still sincere. “I’ve seen how people treat you—acting all proper and business-like—but you’re actually fun.”
Cordy felt a warmth in her chest. It had been a long time since anyone had called her fun, or at least meant it in a way that felt genuine. She had always been the serious one, the one who couldn’t afford to relax too much. But there was something about Zoe’s openness that made her feel… lighter.
“Thanks, Zoe,” Cordy said softly. “I’ve never really been the life of the party. I guess work tends to take up most of my time.”
Zoe waved her hand dismissively. “Work’s overrated. You’re doing great things with Starstream, no doubt. But don’t forget to live a little, alright?”
Cordy nodded, absorbing the advice, even though she knew it wouldn’t be easy to change overnight. Still, she appreciated Zoe’s perspective. She had a way of looking at the world that felt carefree but also grounded in something real.
As the night wore on, Cordy helped Zoe to her car, and they both ended up sharing another laugh as they tried to navigate the drunken giggles and playful banter.
“Let me know when you want to do this again,” Zoe said as she settled into her seat, already half asleep. “I’m sure we’ll have a blast.”
“I’ll hold you to that,” Cordy replied, her voice warm with a sense of connection she hadn’t felt in a while.
As she drove home, Cordy reflected on the evening. It wasn’t just the drink or the good food; it was the conversation, the unexpected bond that had formed between her and Zoe. It was a reminder that, despite her responsibilities and the weight of her business dealings, she still had the capacity to form real, meaningful connections. And for the first time in a long time, Cordy felt a little less alone in the world.
