Chapter 33
Cordy had heard plenty about the Levines’ grand events, but seeing it in person was another experience entirely. As she arrived at the venue, the air was thick with anticipation. The sight of expensive cars lining up to enter was overwhelming, and the lights were so bright they could rival the stars. A subtle but unmistakable buzz of excitement permeated the atmosphere. Even from the outside, it was clear this was not just any birthday celebration—it was a statement.
Inside the club, the atmosphere was equally as extravagant. Lavish decorations, an impressive guest list, and a sense of exclusivity that felt almost suffocating to someone not used to such opulence. Cordy’s eyes briefly scanned the room, trying to familiarize herself with the faces. Some were familiar from the business world, but others were more enigmatic, their faces hidden behind expensive masks of glamour.
“Ms. Sachs?” a voice interrupted her thoughts, and she turned to find Vince Cartman, standing there with a polite, professional smile. He held a drink in hand, his usual demeanor unchanged despite the splendor around them.
“Vince,” she greeted him, offering a small nod. “Quite the event, isn’t it?”
“Mr. Levine spares no expense when it comes to family,” Vince replied, his tone neutral, but there was a certain reverence in his words when he mentioned Alan. “He wanted to make sure you felt welcome.”
Cordy was about to reply when a sharp voice cut through the air.
“Well, well, if it isn’t Ms. Sachs,” Mandy’s voice was dripping with sarcasm. Cordy turned to find her standing a few feet away, her eyes narrowing in a mix of disdain and amusement.
Mandy was wearing a gown that was obviously designed to be the center of attention, and Cordy couldn’t help but feel a pang of annoyance. The way she stood, the perfect picture of grace and pride—it was like Mandy was daring anyone to outshine her tonight.
“I see you’ve decided to grace us with your presence,” Mandy continued, her voice sweet but with an edge. “Though I must admit, I didn’t think you’d actually make it.”
Cordy raised an eyebrow. “I’m here. Just like you, Mandy,” she said coolly, taking a step toward her. “Though I must say, the gown looks beautiful on you. Certainly makes you the center of attention, doesn’t it?”
Mandy’s smile faltered for a moment before she regained her composure. “Oh, I wouldn’t worry about that. It’s a shame you won’t get the chance to enjoy the spotlight. Not that you ever would.”
Cordy’s expression remained unchanged, but her eyes were calculating. “We’ll see about that.”
As they exchanged words, John appeared at her side, his presence commanding attention. Dressed in a sharp suit, he looked every bit the businessman who had earned his place among the city’s elite.
“You look stunning,” he said, his gaze lingering on Cordy for a moment longer than necessary.
“Thank you,” Cordy replied, offering him a polite smile. “The night is just getting started, isn’t it?”
John chuckled, his eyes shifting toward Mandy, who was clearly glaring at them both. “Indeed,” he said smoothly. “But it’s not the gown or the spotlight that matters, is it? It’s the people you’re surrounded by. And right now, I’m surrounded by the right people.”
Mandy’s face tightened at his words, but Cordy simply met her gaze with calm confidence. It was clear that the night was only beginning, and there would be more than just the usual competition for attention.
