Chapter 83
Cordy could see the fatigue and discomfort in Zoe’s expression, but she wasn’t surprised by Zoe’s sudden declaration. The actress was unpredictable, and it seemed that tonight was one of those moments where Zoe just wanted to claim her space and do things her way.
“Alright, you can stay,” Cordy said with a sigh, deciding not to argue. She had already gone out of her way to make Zoe comfortable, so it wasn’t too much of a stretch to let her crash at her place for the night. “But no more drinking, okay?”
Zoe just gave her a lazy smile. “I’ll behave… for now.”
Cordy turned toward the bathroom to prepare another glass of water for Zoe, but when she turned back, Zoe was already snuggled into her bed again, half of her body tangled in the blankets. Cordy chuckled, shaking her head.
“You’re a real piece of work,” she muttered under her breath, but there was a softness in her tone.
The silence in the room was peaceful for a moment as Cordy gathered her thoughts. The phone call with Kyle was still fresh in her mind, the bitterness of his words lingering in her ears. Despite everything, she knew she had made the right choice by walking away from him. But there were days when his words crept back into her mind, trying to convince her that she had made a mistake. Tonight, though, she felt something different—something that came with the ease of being around Zoe, even in the chaotic unpredictability of their evening.
Sitting down on the edge of her bed, Cordy carefully placed the glass of water on the nightstand beside Zoe. She let out a deep breath, feeling the weight of her responsibilities and the strange comfort that Zoe’s presence had brought her tonight.
“Good night, Zoe,” Cordy said quietly.
“Night,” Zoe mumbled in reply, her words muffled by the pillow.
With that, Cordy dimmed the lights and lay back in her own bed, her thoughts still racing. She’d be up early tomorrow to take care of work—Starstream had no room for delay, and there was always more to do. But for now, she allowed herself to relax, even just a little.
Tomorrow would come with its challenges. But tonight, she could breathe.
