Chapter 29
Cordy paused, her mind racing to figure out how to answer his innocent, yet slightly awkward question. She took a deep breath and knelt down to his level.
“Well, you’re still growing, Dicky. As you get older, you’ll change in lots of ways,” she said gently, trying to keep the mood light. “But that’s all part of growing up.”
Richard seemed satisfied with that answer for the moment, his curiosity temporarily pacified. He smiled up at her, his cheeks still slightly pink from the earlier question.
“Okay, Mommy!” he chirped, and with that, the atmosphere lightened again.
Cordy, relieved that the conversation had shifted back to something easier, finished getting him ready for his bath. As she helped him, she felt a warmth in her chest. Despite the complexities of her own life, moments like this—caring for Richard and sharing small, tender interactions—made her heart feel full.
Once Richard was bathed and ready for bed, she received another text from John.
[On my way. You can rest now.]
Cordy smiled at the message, grateful for John’s support. She tucked Richard into bed and kissed him on the forehead. “Goodnight, sweetheart.”
“Night, Mommy,” Richard mumbled, already half asleep.
As she quietly left the room and turned off the lights, Cordy felt a strange sense of peace settle over her. Despite everything going on around her, there was a sense of calm she found in the simplicity of these moments with Richard. She just hoped things would stay this way for a little while longer before the world outside her home made its next move.
