Chapter 69
Cordy stood still for a moment, processing John’s words. She knew he was skilled at manipulating people, but this felt different. The way he spoke made it seem as though he was vulnerable, perhaps even a little pitiful. Yet, she wasn’t naïve—she could tell that behind his carefully crafted words was a man who knew exactly what he was doing.
She clenched her jaw, fighting the urge to give in to his subtle demands. “You’re not fooling me,” she muttered under her breath, but the soft, almost pleading tone in his voice made her hesitate.
“I’ll come by tomorrow,” she finally said, her voice a little firmer. She wasn’t sure if it was out of genuine concern or simply because she felt she owed it to him—after everything he’d done for her, it was hard to ignore the pull he had on her.
John smiled, though there was a hint of satisfaction in his eyes. He knew he had her right where he wanted her. But as much as she hated to admit it, she also knew that she wasn’t the only one who could play this game.
“Thanks,” he said softly, his tone almost too sincere.
Cordy turned away, heading for the door. She had made up her mind to leave, but there was something about the quiet atmosphere in the room, the weight of John’s gaze on her, that made her pause. She felt like she was standing on the edge of something, not entirely sure whether to step forward or retreat.
Without turning around, she said, “I’ll see you tomorrow.”
John didn’t respond immediately, but she could hear the faint rustling of the sheets as he shifted on the bed. She knew he would be watching her leave, but she didn’t look back.
When she stepped out of the room, the silence that greeted her was almost overwhelming. As she walked down the hallway toward the elevator, her mind was racing. There was so much she needed to do—so much work waiting for her at Starstream Group—but the image of John, lying in that bed with that faint, almost smug smile on his face, kept intruding on her thoughts.
She had to admit, despite everything, he had a way of getting under her skin.
