Chapter 16
Cordy could see through Noel’s feigned politeness and wasn’t fazed by the act. She took her seat with a measured calm, allowing the family drama to unfold around her without letting it get to her. She knew the Sachs were always ready to throw barbs, but they didn’t realize how much she’d changed over the years.
The conversation buzzed around her, with her relatives gossiping and whispering behind her back, not even trying to hide their disdain. But she didn’t need their approval anymore. She was far beyond seeking validation from people who had once looked down on her.
“Don’t mind them,” Noel said with a sugary smile, trying to keep up appearances in front of their guests. “So, how’s work at Starstream, Cordy? I heard you’ve been making quite an impression.”
Cordy glanced at Noel, assessing her carefully before responding with a neutral tone, “Starstream’s going well. I’m just focused on making sure the company stays on track.”
“Oh, of course, of course,” Noel replied quickly, though her smile didn’t reach her eyes. “You wouldn’t want to be distracted by something trivial, would you?”
Cordy didn’t even flinch at the jab. She was used to Noel’s attempts at undermining her. Instead, she turned her attention to the rest of the room, watching them carefully. It was always a bit of a spectacle when the Sachs family gathered, but Cordy had long stopped caring about being part of their drama.
Before anyone could say anything more, Simon cleared his throat and said, “Enough with the small talk. Let’s have a drink to celebrate Plum’s birthday.”
The attention shifted away from Cordy, but she could still feel the eyes on her, weighing her every move. It didn’t bother her anymore. She had bigger battles to fight.
Cordy spent the rest of the evening staying largely silent, letting the insults bounce off her like raindrops. When the time finally came to leave, no one said goodbye. But it was fine—she wasn’t there for them. She was there for herself, and that was all that mattered.
As she left the Sachs Mansion, she couldn’t help but feel a surge of determination. There was so much more she needed to do. She had a legacy to reclaim, and a company to take back from their clutches. This family? They had no idea what was coming.
