Chapter 19
Cordy raised an eyebrow, her patience thinning as Bryson’s voice echoed in the quiet garden. “Everyone in North City what?” she asked, her tone cool but edged with annoyance.
Bryson’s face reddened slightly, but he continued, “Everyone in North City knows who you are. Do you really think you can keep acting this way, looking down on your own family?” He stepped closer, his posture tense as he looked down at her. “Your actions affect us all, and if you don’t start acting like you belong, I’ll make sure your position in this family is questioned.”
Cordy tilted her head, her lips curling into a faint, mocking smile. “Oh, really? And what exactly do you think you can do about it? I’m not the one who’s out here trying to cover up family scandals.” She took a small step back, creating just enough distance to emphasize the gulf between them. “You can’t intimidate me with your little threats, Bryson. You’re just another puppet for the Sachs.”
Bryson’s eyes narrowed, and for a moment, Cordy could see his mask of confidence slip just a little. “You think you’re untouchable just because you have your little office at Starstream? It’s not enough, Cordy. You’ll learn that the hard way.”
Cordy straightened, her posture now regal, like she was a queen standing her ground. “If you think I care about any of that, you’re mistaken. I don’t need your approval or your threats. I’m not here to play nice with you or anyone else in this family.” She paused, letting the silence hang between them for a beat before adding, “And for the record, don’t ever presume to lecture me on my place again. It’s not yours to define.”
Bryson clenched his jaw, visibly fuming, but he held back from saying anything more. Cordy could see the wheels turning in his mind, but she wasn’t concerned. He was just another cog in the Sachs machine, and she had no time for his petty games.
Before he could react, she turned on her heel, already over the conversation, ready to leave.
However, just as she took a step forward, Bryson’s voice rang out once more. “This isn’t over, Cordy. Don’t forget, we have ways of making people fall in line.”
Cordy didn’t even glance back this time. “You do that. But remember, I’m not someone you can push around.”
With that, she walked away, her steps measured and purposeful. No matter what the Sachs tried to throw her way, she had no intention of backing down.
