Chapter 20
Cordy gave Fiona a cold glance, her face betraying no sympathy. She could already tell that Fiona’s weekend had been far from pleasant. Sue Yorkman was no one to cross, and Cordy knew exactly how Fiona had ended up in this situation. The scratch marks on her neck were proof enough that Sue had made her displeasure known.
“Is there something I can do for you, Fiona?” Cordy asked with a slight tilt of her head, her voice almost too sweet for the situation.
Fiona, looking both defeated and exhausted, clutched her resignation letter tightly in her hands. She hesitated for a moment before speaking, the pain from her ordeal still fresh in her voice. “I… I just can’t take it anymore. Sue… she has connections everywhere, and I’m not going to survive this. I’ve made too many mistakes.”
Cordy studied Fiona for a long moment, allowing the silence to stretch between them. Despite the circumstances, she didn’t feel the slightest bit of guilt. Fiona had dug her own grave, and now she was reaping the consequences.
“You should’ve thought about that before you decided to mess with the wrong people,” Cordy finally said, her tone sharp. “Sue doesn’t forgive, and neither do I.”
Fiona’s hands trembled as she slid the resignation letter across the desk toward Cordy, her eyes filled with regret. “Please, Cordy, I… I didn’t know what I was getting into.”
Cordy didn’t even look at the letter at first, instead leaning back in her chair, arms crossed. “The thing is, Fiona, I never expected you to be stupid enough to fall for someone like Simon Sachs. You should’ve known better. But here we are. You can quit now, or I can make sure your reputation is thoroughly tarnished. The choice is yours.”
Fiona’s face paled even further as she grasped the full extent of what Cordy was implying. “You wouldn’t…”
“I would,” Cordy replied smoothly. “Don’t mistake my silence for forgiveness.”
Fiona closed her eyes, a tear slipping down her cheek as she nodded slowly. “I’ll leave, I promise. I just… I didn’t mean for any of this to happen.”
Cordy nodded curtly and stood up, glancing at the resignation letter before finally taking it in hand. “Good. I expect you to pack up and leave by the end of the day.”
Fiona lingered for a moment longer, but Cordy had already dismissed her with a sharp look. There was no more sympathy left to offer, and nothing more to be said.
As Fiona left, Cordy sat back down at her desk, the weight of everything that had transpired settling over her. The Sachs family, their power games, the drama, it all felt like a tangled mess. But Cordy was used to it. She had long learned to navigate through their schemes, and she was determined to come out on top, just as she always had.
Noel and Simon were nothing compared to the battles she’d already fought. And as for Bryson, well, he would soon learn just how insignificant he truly was in the grand scheme of things.
Cordy was far from finished. She wasn’t just surviving in this world—she was conquering it.
