Chapter 26
The room fell silent for a moment, as if everyone was trying to process what they had just witnessed. Mandy stood frozen, her jaw nearly touching the floor, while Noel looked like she had just swallowed a bitter pill. Kyle, on the other hand, tried to mask his admiration, his eyes quickly darting away, but his expression betrayed his thoughts.
Cordy, however, remained calm and composed, almost as if the gown was a mere afterthought. She glanced down at Richard, offering him a gentle smile, then looked up at the stunned faces in front of her.
“You were saying something about a bet?” Cordy asked, her voice cool, but with an unmistakable edge of challenge.
Mandy, still reeling from the shock, tried to gather herself, but the words came out in a desperate, wavering tone. “I… I didn’t think it would actually fit… You shouldn’t have even had it tailored for you!”
Cordy raised an eyebrow. “Well, it fits perfectly. Now, about that bet…” She took a step forward, her posture elegant, almost regal, and her gaze locked onto Mandy’s. “I think we’ve both had enough of this little game, don’t you?”
Mandy’s face flushed crimson, humiliation and anger bubbling beneath the surface. She hadn’t anticipated being so thoroughly outclassed, and she certainly hadn’t expected Cordy to look so effortlessly stunning in the gown that Mandy had thought should be hers.
Noel, who had been quiet up until that point, finally spoke. “Mandy… maybe it’s time to stop. You can’t always get what you want, and Cordy… well, she’s clearly more than capable of handling herself.”
Mandy shot her a venomous look, but Noel didn’t flinch. Cordy, still holding Richard’s hand, smiled at Noel’s rare show of backbone.
“You’re right, Noel,” Cordy said, her voice light but firm. “It’s time for everyone to accept the facts.” She turned to the store assistant, who was standing nearby, still in shock from the whole ordeal. “I’ll take the gown. Have it packed for me.”
The store assistant, who had been struggling to keep the peace, finally nodded in agreement. “Of course, Ms. Sachs. Right away.”
As Cordy turned to leave, she glanced at Kyle, who was still standing there, looking a little disoriented. “It’s nice to see you again, Kyle,” she said, her tone polite but distant.
Kyle, who had been caught in the middle of this dramatic exchange, seemed momentarily unsure of how to respond. He forced a smile, but it lacked the warmth that Cordy had once found in it. “Yeah… you look great, Cordy. Truly,” he muttered, still looking uneasy.
Cordy didn’t respond, turning instead to leave with Richard, who was still beaming with pride.
As they walked away, Mandy could barely contain her frustration, while Noel simply let out a quiet sigh. She was left standing there, trying to make sense of what had just happened, her mind racing with thoughts of how this would affect her plans.
And as for Cordy, she had one less thing to prove.
