Chapter 30
John paused, his hand still holding the loafers. His expression shifted slightly, and for a brief moment, Cordy could see something akin to hesitation in his eyes.
“Yes,” he finally replied, his voice calm but guarded. “I’m part of the Levine family, though I don’t make a point of advertising it.”
Cordy studied him closely, her curiosity piqued. The Levines were indeed a prominent family in the city, known for their wealth, influence, and connections. She had heard their name before, but this was the first time she’d directly encountered someone so closely tied to them.
“That’s… interesting,” she said slowly, taking a moment to process his words. She was careful not to let her surprise show too much. “I never would have guessed.”
John gave a small shrug, his face once again neutral. “Not everyone likes to make it public. Some of us prefer to keep a low profile.”
Cordy nodded, still mulling over the information. “I see. Well, I didn’t mean to pry. It’s just that you seem different from what I imagined.”
John let out a quiet chuckle at her words. “A lot of people are surprised when they meet me. But in the end, I’m just… me.”
Cordy studied him for a moment longer, considering his words. “I suppose you are,” she said thoughtfully, before offering a polite smile. “Thanks for helping with Dicky, and for coming by tonight.”
John nodded, his gaze lingering for a moment longer than necessary. “You’re welcome. I’ll see you tomorrow at eight.”
With that, he turned and walked out of the door, leaving Cordy standing there, her thoughts swirling. She had no idea what to make of the evening’s exchange, but something told her that her interactions with John Levine were far from over.
