Chapter 5
As Cordy looked at Richard, her heart softened at the little boy’s innocent question. He had truly grown attached to her in such a short time, and while she had tried to maintain emotional distance, his gentle demeanor made it increasingly difficult. She smiled down at him, her fingers brushing his soft hair.
“You’ll see me again, Dicky,” she reassured him. “I’ll come to visit, I promise.”
John, who had been silent until now, watched the scene unfold. His expression was unreadable, but there was a flicker in his eyes. It was the kind of look that made Cordy feel as though he was observing her every movement, calculating, perhaps.
“Goodbye, Mommy,” Richard said, his little voice tinged with reluctance.
Cordy’s heart clenched as she heard those words, and she bent down to kiss his forehead one last time before she turned away. As she wheeled herself out of the ward, she couldn’t shake the feeling that her life was beginning to take a turn she hadn’t anticipated. John Levine’s presence loomed in her thoughts, and though she had rejected his advances, there was something undeniably magnetic about him that made it hard to dismiss him completely.
At the hospital’s entrance, she paused for a moment, contemplating what she was walking into next. The weight of her responsibilities—both personal and professional—pressed down on her. Soon, she would take control of Starstream Group, and she couldn’t afford to let anything or anyone distract her.
As she got into the car waiting for her, Cordy reflected on the strange connection she had with Richard and the equally confusing one with John. She didn’t want to delve into the emotions that were beginning to surface, not when she had so much to focus on.
Her phone buzzed, pulling her from her thoughts. It was a message from her lawyer, confirming her meeting regarding Starstream. Another chapter of her life was about to unfold, and it seemed that, no matter how hard she tried to avoid it, John Levine was going to be part of that journey.
