Chapter 64
The chaos continued to swirl around them, but Cordy’s focus was entirely on John. Her heart raced as she helped him, seeing the blood starting to soak into his clothes where the steel pipe had struck him. Despite the frantic energy of the scene, John seemed oddly calm, almost too calm for someone who had just taken a blow like that.
“You’re not fine, John!” Cordy snapped, her voice laced with panic as she caught a glimpse of the gash on his back. She wasn’t about to let him downplay the injury. “We need to get you out of here now!”
Randy, having finally gathered himself, assisted in lifting John, though his face was tight with worry. “We’re on our way, Ms. Sachs,” he said as he helped John to the car, his own unease written plainly on his face.
Cordy had always thought John was someone who kept his composure no matter the circumstances, but she was seeing another side to him now—a man who wasn’t as indestructible as he liked to appear. As they helped him into the backseat of the car, she couldn’t help but feel a tight knot form in her chest.
As the car sped toward the hospital, Cordy sat close to John, her eyes never leaving his face, even as he fought to keep his breaths steady.
“John, you really need to let us take care of you,” she insisted, her voice soft but firm. He gave her a weak, almost amused smile.
“I’ve been through worse,” he said, trying to make light of the situation, but it was clear from his pale face that the pain was beginning to catch up with him.
Cordy felt a pang of guilt. She had been so caught up in the mess at the factory, she hadn’t even considered how much danger she might have been putting herself in. And now John was paying the price for her oversight.
“No more of that,” Cordy said, her tone more serious. “You’re not invincible, John.”
“Maybe,” he said quietly, “But I’d do anything to keep you safe.”
The words struck her harder than she expected. She wasn’t sure what it was about the way he said it—calmly, with no expectation—but it made her feel both grateful and conflicted at the same time. She hadn’t been ready for this. For him. For the way he made her feel like there was something more between them.
But now wasn’t the time to analyze that.
As they arrived at the hospital, Randy rushed to get help. A flurry of nurses and doctors were already on hand, and within moments, John was rushed into surgery, leaving Cordy standing in the waiting room, trying to steady her nerves.
Vince arrived shortly after, having stayed behind to handle the mess at the plant. He gave her a concerned look but didn’t press her for details. It wasn’t the time for questions. Everyone knew how much was riding on this situation.
Hours passed, and Cordy found herself pacing in the hospital corridor, anxiety gnawing at her. The minutes felt like hours, and every time someone walked by with a look of concern, her heart would skip a beat.
Finally, a doctor came out. His expression was guarded. “Ms. Sachs, Mr. Levine is stable now. The injury was serious, but he’s going to be fine. He just needs to rest.”
Cordy exhaled in relief. She hadn’t even realized how tightly she had been holding her breath until the weight lifted. “Thank you,” she said, her voice barely above a whisper.
The doctor nodded and left, leaving Cordy standing there, processing everything that had just happened. John had come out of nowhere, thrown himself into danger to protect her. And now… she was left with the remnants of the mess Simon had caused and a life that seemed to be spiraling out of control.
But one thing was certain—she wasn’t going to let Simon win. Not after all of this. Not after John had risked his life for hers.
