Chapter 66
Cordy stood for a moment, contemplating her emotions as she gazed at John, who lay there so still, his breathing steady but faint. His concern for her, his actions—everything seemed so genuine, so different from what she had come to expect from people.
But as much as it warmed her heart, there was also a part of her that refused to let her guard down. The wounds from her past, the betrayal, and the years of learning to stand alone had made her wary. Even now, as she felt this strange pull toward him, the old fears bubbled up inside her.
She took a deep breath and turned back to Randy. “Alright,” she said quietly. “I’ll eat.”
Randy led her to the small dining area they had prepared for her in the hospital, though she wasn’t particularly hungry. The smell of food made her stomach churn with the stress of the situation, but she forced herself to take a bite. She couldn’t afford to fall apart now, not with everything that was happening.
As she sat there, eating mechanically, her mind kept drifting back to John. Why had he done it? Why had he risked everything to be there for her today? It wasn’t just an act of kindness. There was something deeper, something that neither of them had addressed yet, but Cordy could feel it.
When she returned to John’s room, he was still asleep, though his breathing had slowed to a more peaceful rhythm. She sat beside him again, watching him for a while before reaching out to gently adjust the blanket over his chest.
A quiet, uneasy thought crossed her mind. Maybe, just maybe, I can trust him… But she quickly shook it away. Trust was not something she could easily give anymore. Not after everything.
Her phone buzzed again, this time with a message from Vince. The Sachs are starting to get desperate. They’re making moves behind the scenes, but we’ll need more evidence if we’re going to fight back in court.
Cordy stared at the message, her grip tightening around the phone. Simon had crossed a line, and it wasn’t just about business anymore—it was personal. It was about power, control, and making sure she knew her place.
She couldn’t let him win, no matter what.
She looked over at John, still resting peacefully. He had done so much for her today, but there was no room for distractions. She had a battle to fight. The legal fight with her family, the fight for her own autonomy and future.
But as she stared at his face, her heart wavered again. Maybe, just maybe, she thought as she softly kissed his forehead, this could be the start of something different. But she quickly steeled herself, reminding herself that she couldn’t afford to lose focus.
She would protect herself. And if it meant keeping John at arm’s length, so be it.
