Chapter 68
The atmosphere in the room grew increasingly tense as Randy awkwardly spooned food into John’s mouth. The contrast between the two men’s discomfort was almost palpable, but John seemed to revel in the situation, throwing Randy a glare every time he was fed, his pride clearly taking a hit. It was almost comical, but Cordy couldn’t help but feel a little sympathy for Randy. It wasn’t easy to be caught in the middle of such an absurd scene.
Cordy, for her part, tried to maintain her focus on her meal. But every so often, she couldn’t help but glance up at John. His gaze kept shifting between her and Randy, and she could feel the tension building in the room. It wasn’t that she minded helping him, but there was something about the situation that felt oddly… intimate. She quickly turned her attention back to her food, trying to ignore the growing discomfort.
Finally, after what felt like an eternity, Randy placed the last spoonful into John’s mouth and sighed in relief. “Done,” he said, wiping his hands on a napkin.
John raised an eyebrow, clearly dissatisfied, but said nothing. He turned to Cordy, his usual stoic expression slowly returning. “You’re really going to make me eat like this, huh?” he muttered, his tone a mix of annoyance and amusement.
Cordy met his gaze, her lips curling into a small, teasing smile. “I thought you were too weak to feed yourself,” she replied, her voice light but tinged with sarcasm.
John chuckled softly, a hint of mischief in his eyes. “I didn’t say I couldn’t feed myself. Just that I preferred not to.”
Randy, clearly trying to save face, cleared his throat. “I’ll leave you two to it then.” With a quick bow, he retreated out of the room, leaving the two of them alone once again.
Cordy finished the last of her meal, her stomach feeling much better, but her mind still reeling from the events of the day. She could still feel the warmth of John’s fingers brushing against hers earlier, and the way his gaze lingered on her. Despite the awkwardness, there was an undeniable connection between them—a pull that she wasn’t sure she was ready to acknowledge.
She stood up, moving toward the window to give herself a moment to breathe. The night had fallen, and the city lights flickered in the distance. She took a deep breath, trying to clear her head.
John watched her silently for a few moments before speaking again. “You’ve been quiet,” he said, his voice softer now. “What’s on your mind?”
Cordy hesitated. She didn’t want to open up to him—not yet. She wasn’t sure if she could trust him completely, despite the bond they seemed to be forming. “Nothing,” she finally said, forcing a smile. “Just tired.”
John didn’t press, but there was a flicker of concern in his eyes. “If you ever need to talk, you know where to find me.”
Cordy nodded, unsure of how to respond. “Thanks,” she said quietly.
She turned away from the window and walked back to his bedside, her gaze softening as she took in his tired expression. Despite everything that had happened, despite the tension between them, she couldn’t shake the feeling that she was starting to care about him in a way she wasn’t prepared for.
“You should get some rest,” she said gently, her tone more tender than she intended.
John nodded, his eyes heavy with exhaustion. “I will. You should too.”
Cordy hesitated, then sat down in the chair beside his bed, her mind still spinning. She didn’t know what the future held, or what role John would play in it, but for now, she was here. And that, for the moment, was enough.
