Chapter 79
John’s phone buzzed on the bedside table, and he reached for it with a small smile upon seeing Cordy’s name. He had been waiting for her message.
Rolling over slightly to sit up, he typed back with a teasing tone: [Not quite. You know I can’t sleep without you nearby.]
He set the phone down and leaned back against the pillows, glancing out the window. His hospital stay had stretched longer than he anticipated, but with Cordy so caught up in work, he had learned to be patient.
When his phone buzzed again, he grabbed it quickly, eager for her response.
“I’m sorry I’ve been busy. But I’ll make it up to you soon. How are you feeling?”
John chuckled softly, his fingers tapping out a reply. “Better now that I’m hearing from you. But I’d feel even better if you came to visit me soon. I miss you.”
His message was playful, but there was an earnestness behind it. Despite all the political maneuvering at Starstream, despite Cordy’s strength and ambition, there was a side of her he had grown to rely on—a side that was gentle and caring, especially towards him.
His phone lit up again. “I’m sorry for being distant. I’ll make time for you. Just a little longer, and I’ll be there.”
He smiled, knowing that Cordy was doing everything she could to juggle her responsibilities and still be there for him. She had a lot on her plate, but that didn’t change how much she cared.
He placed his phone down, finally allowing himself to close his eyes. Tomorrow, Cordy would be with him again, and for now, that was enough.
