Chapter 80
As Cordy made her way toward the door, she couldn’t shake the memory of the awkward moment between her and John. The fall, the near accident, and the almost embarrassing situation—it all played on repeat in her mind. Her cheeks were still tinged with a hint of pink, and the last thing she wanted was for him to think she was making a bigger deal out of it than necessary. Still, she could feel the weight of their unspoken words between them.
John’s comment about her not visiting every day lingered in her thoughts, but she knew he was just teasing. In truth, she did have a lot on her plate, but she couldn’t deny how much she enjoyed his company.
Before leaving the room, she glanced back at him, just for a moment. He was still lying in bed, looking as composed as ever, though she could tell he wasn’t as comfortable as he let on. She could almost hear him sighing under the weight of his own stubbornness.
“Good night, John,” she said softly, her voice quieter than before.
He responded with a smirk, “Good night, Cordy. Don’t stay out too late.”
Cordy turned and walked out of the room, the door clicking shut behind her. The hallway seemed unusually quiet as she made her way back to the elevator. She didn’t know what she expected from their relationship—maybe nothing, maybe everything. But she couldn’t help but wonder how much longer they would continue dancing around each other like this.
The night air outside felt cool against her skin as she stepped into the car. Walter glanced over at her as they drove off.
“You seem distracted, Ms. Sachs,” he remarked, but Cordy was already lost in thought, her mind replaying everything that had happened in the hospital.
As much as she tried to focus on work, her thoughts kept drifting back to the way John had looked at her before she left—the quiet longing that lingered behind his teasing. She wasn’t sure what it meant, but she felt a familiar pull in her chest.
Perhaps she did care more than she was letting on.
