Chapter 81
Cordy let out a quiet chuckle at Zoe’s bluntness, finding it both refreshing and disarming. The actress’s straightforward nature was a stark contrast to the polished persona she usually showed to the world.
“I’m glad I’m proving you wrong,” Cordy replied with a smile, pouring herself a glass of beer as well. She raised her glass slightly before taking a sip. “It’s not always easy being underestimated.”
Zoe laughed, her eyes twinkling. “Well, let’s just say I’ve had my own fair share of misjudgments. People like to see what they want to see. But you—” Zoe paused, holding Cordy’s gaze, “—you’ve clearly earned your place at the top.”
Cordy felt a warmth spread through her at the genuine compliment. She wasn’t used to receiving praise in this way—especially from someone as high-profile as Zoe. Most people, even those close to her, focused on her company or business prowess, rarely acknowledging the hard work it took to get there. Zoe, however, seemed to appreciate the multifaceted sides of her personality.
The conversation drifted easily from business to personal stories, and as they ate, Cordy felt a camaraderie building between them. It was rare for her to let her guard down, but Zoe made it seem effortless. The actress was refreshingly unpretentious, and their shared laughs over the spicy dishes and alcohol felt strangely comforting.
“You’re not what I expected either,” Cordy finally admitted. “I always thought people in your industry were a bit… disconnected, you know? But you’re different. You have this grounded energy about you.”
Zoe raised her eyebrows in amusement. “Hey, just because I play a glamorous, spoiled diva on-screen doesn’t mean I’m one in real life. I like to let loose too. Especially when there’s good food and good company involved.”
They shared a moment of easy silence, both of them enjoying the food and the surprisingly relaxed atmosphere. Cordy had often seen Zoe’s public image, and while it was undoubtedly crafted and perfect, it was a refreshing change to see the woman behind the scenes—unafraid to be herself, flaws and all.
“So,” Zoe began after another bite of sausage, “you’re always so business-minded. You’ve been taking control of Starstream, but… what about your personal life? You ever let yourself breathe outside of work?”
Cordy hesitated for a moment, taken off guard by the question. Her personal life had always taken a backseat to her ambition, and even with her success, she rarely allowed herself the luxury of downtime. There were always meetings, projects, and a never-ending list of responsibilities.
“I guess I’ve never really found the time for it,” she replied, her voice thoughtful. “Work has always been my focus. But I suppose everyone needs balance, right?”
Zoe smiled knowingly. “We all need something outside of work, or we’ll burn out. Sometimes, it’s easy to forget that.”
Cordy nodded slowly, considering her words. Maybe Zoe was right. Maybe it was time for her to find a little more balance between her professional goals and personal happiness. She had been so caught up in proving herself, in building Starstream to new heights, that she had neglected the things that made life worth living outside of business.
“Well,” Cordy said, shifting the conversation, “maybe I’ll start by enjoying this dinner more. I’ve certainly earned it, haven’t I?”
Zoe’s face lit up with a grin. “Now that’s the spirit! Here’s to more nights like this.”
They clinked their glasses together, both of them settling into the rhythm of the evening. For the first time in a while, Cordy felt a sense of ease she hadn’t realized she needed.
