Chapter 84
Cordy couldn’t help but smile at Zoe’s reaction. It was clear that Zoe didn’t appreciate being treated like a child, especially by someone like Jay. Even though she had a sharp edge to her, Zoe’s playful demeanor made it easy to let things slide.
“Guess he’s just looking out for you,” Cordy said, leaning back on the couch with her coffee.
Zoe grinned mischievously. “Looking out for me? Or looking out for his precious scene?” she teased, her tone light but with a hint of sarcasm. “But whatever, I’ll be there on time. He just needs to learn to stop treating me like a kid.”
Cordy nodded, understanding the sentiment. It wasn’t unusual for directors to be overbearing, but it was clear that Zoe valued her independence. Cordy thought back to her own experiences in the business world, where sometimes she had to fight to be taken seriously despite her young age. She admired Zoe’s ability to push back, even when it was clear she had so much at stake.
“Should we get some rest then?” Cordy asked, setting her coffee down on the table. “You’ll need your energy for the scene tomorrow.”
Zoe sighed dramatically, though it was all in good fun. “Fine, fine. But I swear, I’ll need at least two cups of coffee tomorrow morning before I’m human again.”
Cordy chuckled. “Fair enough. I’ve got plenty of coffee for both of us.” She stretched a bit before getting up to prepare the guest room. “You can take the bed, and I’ll grab the couch. Hope you don’t mind.”
Zoe shot her a mischievous glance. “You’re too kind. But I’m not taking your bed. You should sleep well too.”
Cordy raised an eyebrow. “I’m used to it. You take the bed.”
Zoe shrugged playfully, not arguing further. “Alright, but only because you’re so nice.”
Cordy couldn’t help but feel a bit more at ease with Zoe. It had been a long time since she’d had someone to talk to like this, someone who didn’t judge her for her past or see her as just another businesswoman. There was something refreshing about their friendship, and for the first time in a while, Cordy found herself genuinely looking forward to tomorrow.
She prepared the room for Zoe, then set out a blanket on the couch for herself. It wasn’t much, but it felt like enough for now. After everything, she could use a night of rest, and maybe a new friendship was exactly what she needed to clear her mind from the chaos of the past few months.
“Good night, Cordy,” Zoe said softly as she climbed into the bed, her voice carrying a bit of warmth.
“Good night, Zoe,” Cordy replied, settling into her makeshift bed. She closed her eyes and let herself drift off, thoughts of work and the unexpected turns of her day slowly fading into the background.
Tomorrow would be another busy day, but it didn’t feel as overwhelming with Zoe’s carefree presence still lingering in the apartment.
