Chapter 94
John remained silent for a long moment, processing Randy’s words. His grip on the pen tightened, but his face betrayed nothing of the turmoil that roiled inside him. He was no stranger to rejection, but the way Cordy had turned him away felt different. Her words were firm, resolute—there was no room for hesitation, no invitation for him to help her, not even a sliver of hope for a connection.
It hurt, more than he wanted to admit.
“I didn’t think she’d say no,” John muttered finally, more to himself than to Randy. His gaze remained fixed on the blank screen of his phone, as if it might offer some answer to his questions. “I thought I understood her… that we had something.”
Randy watched him closely, sensing the conflict in John’s voice. “Sir,” he said cautiously, “it’s not about you, it’s about her. She’s been through a lot, and now, this scandal—she’s probably trying to prove something to herself. To everyone.”
John’s frown deepened. “I know. She’s stubborn. She always has been.” He chuckled bitterly, almost to himself. “Maybe that’s why I’m so drawn to her.”
Randy hesitated before offering, “I think it’s clear that Cordy values her independence more than anything right now. She’s already been betrayed by the people closest to her—she’s trying to protect herself. And maybe she’s pushing you away because she doesn’t want to feel like she needs someone else’s help.”
John glanced at Randy, catching the understanding in his eyes. He sighed, rubbing his temples. “I get it. She’s trying to handle everything on her own. But… I want to help her. I need to help her.”
“I know, sir. But it’s not always easy, especially when the person doesn’t want your help. It’s about timing, too.”
John nodded slowly, his eyes growing distant as he thought about Cordy’s rejection. He wasn’t ready to give up, not yet. Even if she didn’t want him to be involved, he couldn’t let her fight this battle alone.
After a long pause, John stood up abruptly, his voice sharp with renewed determination. “Set up a meeting with the PR team as planned. And I want everything to be ready when Cordy realizes that she needs help. Whether she wants it or not.” His jaw clenched as he made his decision. “I’ll give her the time she needs. But I won’t sit by and watch her fall apart. Not again.”
Randy nodded, understanding the gravity of John’s resolve. “Understood, sir. I’ll make sure everything is in motion.”
John walked over to the window, looking out at the city below. He had made his choice. If Cordy wouldn’t accept his help now, he would make sure that when she was ready, he would be there—prepared, unwavering, and more determined than ever to stand by her side.
Because even if she couldn’t see it yet, he knew that she needed him.
